What are the best public transport options for visiting the Cinque Terre from the resort?

The train station Sestri Ponente is nearby. Trains can take you directly to Monterosso, the first of the five villages. Alternatively, a boat from the downtown harbor, about 7 km away, is also an option. I'm planning to visit in August and have two dogs. Are they allowed at the hotel?
